Looking For Antarctic Animals

May-22-2010 By Roger Marshall

You?d be surprised that the farthest southern living animal is actually a pink mite. This tiny creature is only 1/100th of an inch long. Looking very similar to a spider, it dines on algae and fungi. A scientist from Hawaii just found the pink mite very close to the South Pole. It was only 309 miles away. Within 266 miles of the South Pole, this same entomologist found lichens growing. This is far closer than any living organism has been found to the Pole.

There are only certain types of animals that take up permanent residence on the Antarctic continent, and they are insectoid. Although your eye can’t see them, around 56 species of arthropods have been found there. The biggest of these is the horsefly-sized wingless fly, which remains the largest permanent resident of Antarctica. In the winter, hibernation is the name of the game, but once the temperature starts to get hot enough to where ice melts, they come out.

An Introduction To Attractions In Toronto

May-22-2010 By Adriana Noton

If you are looking for a vacation that will be diverse and fun for the entire family, Toronto is one place you may want to consider. This city is jam packed with shopping, sightseeing, nightlife, outdoor fun and a whole lot of things for kids to do too. And great restaurants are not hard to come across either. To put it simply, there is a plethora of attractions in Toronto.

Until 2008, Toronto was home to the world’s tallest free standing structure. In 2008, the Bruj Dubai overtook Toronto’s CN Tower and gained that title. But, even though it is no longer the tallest, it is the first thing you will notice when you arrive.

The tower is 1815 feet high and equipped with glass walled elevators. Visitors can take a glass floored elevator to the Look Out level and then walk around on the Glass Floor. From here, you can see all the way down to the street (1136 feet below.) You might then continue on to the Skypod which is up 1466 feet. From here, on a clear day, spectators can see as far as Niagara Falls about 100 miles away.

You might believe that the biggest boats ever built are those that provide us with super vacations on the high seas. Cruise ships have been publicly competing for the top slot, but they do not take home the medal for largest vessels. In their class, they have the highest rank, but if you’re comparing all ships they actually fall somewhere in the middle of the pack. The supertankers are the reigning champion of large vessel building. As a commercial vessel, supertankers have historically been the modern marvels of the seas.

There are still quite a few supertankers in service, although the largest one built to date has been scrapped. At 1504 feet or 458.5 meters, the Knock Nevis was considered the largest functional ship to ever be built. Naturally, over the years many shipbuilders have considered that tankers of such size might not be as financially viable as tankers that are smaller, built with more safety features, and require less fuel to propel.

In the passenger ship class, one of the biggest boats ever to be designed is nearly ready for her first splash into the water. Royal Caribbean has built a new impressive model that is 1181 feet, which is 360 meters long. She is jam packed with activities, venues, entertainment, and all the trimmings of a big city.
