Make sure to plan and book early so that you can get the best deal possible. Once you choose the type of cruise, ship, travel dates and cabin style, you will have to put down your deposit. Most deposits are around 10 percent of the total vacation package for a long cruise and 20 percent for a short cruise.

The rest of the balance will be paid between 45 to 60 days before you leave on your cruise. If you plan on making late reservations, you will have to pay the entire balance after your travel is confirmed. Between your booking and your departure, cruise lines have the right to increase taxes and fees due to fluctuating cost and exchange rates. Don’t be shy to make special requests. Many people that have been on cruise vacations like to ask for seating preferences and non-smoking/smoking options.

Once your entire payment has been received, you will be able to get your mailed cruise tickets and package. Verify that all the documents are there and that your itinerary is correct. Also, an important matter to check is your airline tickets. Make sure that the tickets coincide with your cruise ship departure date.

Remember that sea/air packages are hard to change once everything is booked. Airline arrangements typically cannot be changed without an additional fee, as cruises book airfare in bulk in order to receive better prices. If an airline flight does get canceled, a cruise is not obligated to refund your cruise tickets if you don’t reach your ship in time. Plan to leave a few days early so that you won’t get stuck at the dock while the ship leaves you.
