Once you have decided to go for a cruise, it will be necessary to decide which cabin you go for. Much like selecting a hotel room of course, but with certain other issues you’ll have to take into consideration. After all, hotel rooms tend not move all that much; and with cruise ships being very much floating hotels, your cabin hopefully will!

Of course, that isn’t to say you will be spending all your time there; far from it. Quite apart from the time you will be on shore exploring the sites and enjoying the scenery, there are also hundreds of activities to keep you entertained on board cruise ships. But it is good to spend a little time going through the options - it may take some time - such is the depth of variety offered to you.

If you are heading off on a mini-cruise, the choice may not be so important. But with most cruises running for over seven days, having a place to get away from all the fun will be needed!

The first cabin type to discuss is the least expensive; Inside Cabins. Whilst not having any outside space, or even a window, these are excellent for the younger crowd who just want a “crash pad”. All fundamental needs are catered for, so these can be an excellent introduction for the first timer too.

The lack of a tub can also detract some people, though shower rooms are standard throughout cruise ships until Suite level. Facilities are excellent however.

Inside Cabins on cruise ships are also available with the addition of a window or porthole. Slightly more expensive, the view given is nothing more than the sea itself. It does of course allow you to be aware of the outdoor light.

If more connection with the sea and views are required, it is best to go for a Balcony Cabin. As the name suggests, these come with a small balcony or terrace area; usually off the bedroom. Many also come with a separate indoor seating area too. However, most still only have access to shower facilities.

These are an excellent choice for couples, and it is lovely to be able to sit on the balcony and read a book, or enjoy a glass of wine together. Private sunbathing is not recommended however, as the balconies are quite narrow and can often be overseen by your neighbors!

Apart from Executive Suites, a Standard Suite is the pinnacle of accommodation offered on most modern Cruise Ships. Significant extra space, a full bathroom (with tub), a seating area, a second bedroom, larger and more private balconies or terraces are to be expected with these.

Whilst deciding which cabin type to go for, you will also need to consider the location on board. This is very much a personal choice, and each location has its pros and cons regards severity of motion, views, engine noise disruption and so forth.

No matter what decision you make in your cabin choice, your vacations on board cruise ships will be memorable. With the world as your oyster, you can enjoy visiting different cultures and seeing exciting sights; knowing you have a mini home to come back to after your adventures.
